About <i>what about</i>: the semantics and syntax of irregular <i>wh</i>-questions in English

Abstract Although often used as diagnostic tools in discourse studies, irregular wh -questions English, which take the form of what/how about … ? and if , have not received sufficient attention terms their semantic syntactic properties. This article investigates from perspectives. Semantically, there is a topic-comment relationship between wh- word rest sentence. Syntactically, an -question neither displays explicit matrix subject-predicate structure nor involves fronted auxiliary. pursues three objectives. First, descriptive overview provided, shows that complement can belong to various categories. Second, compared with declarative sentences, reveals some properties -questions. Third, formal account formulated framework Dynamic Syntax, captures interaction components -question. Additionally, present dynamic contrasted existing hanging topic construction highlights merits current account.
